Here is are some highlights of our portfolio which covers a wide range of commercial, institutional, residential, industrial buildings completed over the last 16 years

Richcraft Recreation Complex - Kanata, ON

Structural Engineering Design of the 77,000 sqft Recreation Complex.

  • Design of long span open web steel trusses over pool area to support the roof structure.
  • Structural system featuring 1.5-meter-deep glulam beams to support the entrance atrium roof structure.
  • Recreation complex features an eight-lane swimming pool, a leisure and therapeutic pool, two full gymnasiums, a fitness and cardio centre, multi-purpose rooms, a lighted sports field with artificial turf and an outdoor skate park.
  • Working in tandem with the architect and other design professionals to complete the structural design and receive all appropriate permits and approvals. 

Niagara Falls Convention Centre

Structural Engineering Design of the 300,000 sqft multi-purpose Arena and Convention Center.

  • Largest meetings and events facility in the Niagara Region.
  • 82,000 sq. ft. free span exhibit hall featuring 230 ft long span steel trusses
  • A bowed and folded curtain wall of glass cascades along the street reflecting the sweep of Niagara’s waterfall.
  • Circulation spaces, as well as meeting, banquet, theatre, and exhibition facilities.

Caledon Senior Centre - Expansion

J.P. Samuel & Associates acted as Structural/Civil Engineer on the project for the expansion and renovation of the senior centre to attach it to the adjacent Community Centre for Recreation and Wellness.

  • Design included reinforced concrete foundations, reinforced masonry block wall construction and steel framed roof structure.
  • Budget conscious design was implemented where possible to fit within the Town of Caledon's cost limitations.
  • Coordination and implementation was completed in tandem with the Architect, Mechanical, Electrical, Landscape and Fire Safety Consultants through weeklies coordination meetings and frequent on-site assessment.
  • Special consideration was made in the design to avoid any intrusion to the daily operation of both facilities during construction phase.

Caledon Fire Stations 301, 306, and 308

J.P. Samuel & Associates acted as Structural/Civil Engineer on the project for the expansion to 3 fire stations for the Town of Caledon.

  • Design included reinforced concrete spread footings, steel and wood framed structure to integrate with the existing fire stations.
  • Post-Disaster climatic loading used in the design.
  • Implementation of value engineering design to maintain cost constraints of the Town of Caledon.
  • Coordination and implementation was completed in tandem with the Architect, Mechanical, Electrical through weeklies coordination meetings and frequent on-site assessment.
  • Special consideration was made in the design to avoid any intrusion to the daily emergency operation of all fire stations.

Union Station Revitalization - Toronto

Acted as Structural Site Engineer for the contractor during construction of the union station revitalization project.

  • Provided structural engineering solutions for a series of construction related design requirements. We provided on-site assessments to provide technical guidance and provided site-engineering design solutions to the contractor.
  • A typical project entailed displacement and plumbness readings on recently constructed steel columns. Reinforcement of the existing columns with additional framing to strengthen the moment capacity of the compression member including bolted and welded connection design.
  • Union Station Revitalization Project:
  • included Gross floor area increase of  approximately 14 per cent – and increase over 10,000 square meters (>100,000 square feet).
  • Over triple the capacity of GO Concourses with the completion of the York Concourse and the revitalized Bay Concourse
  • An addition of approximately 14,900 square meters (>160,000 square feet) of new retail space, which includes the new retail level under the concourses, Union Food Court, Fresh Market (coming in 2022), and an overall enhanced retail experience
  • A revitalized VIA Concourse and Panorama Lounge
  • The Front Street, York Street and Bay Street glass moat covers
  • Expanded PATH access. Previously, PATH access was only through the TTC. Now, Union Station’s Bay Concourse connects to the PATH through the Bay retail area
  • Two new bike parking stations

Condominium - Portland Street - Toronto

Structural Engineer for the design and construction of the small-rise condo.

  • Structural Engineering design and drawings, shop drawing review and site reviews.
  • Ten Storey Residential Apartment with three levels of underground parking
  • Cast -in-place reinforced concrete slab and column design.

Condominium- 277 Davenport - Toronto

J.P. Samuel & Associates acted as Structural Engineer for the design and construction of the small-rise condo.

  • Structural design and drawings, shop drawing review and site reviews.
  • Seven Storey Residential Condo with two levels of underground parking
  • Cast -in-place reinforced concrete slab and column design.

Mahamevnawa Monastery - Markham

Structural Engineering Design services of structure using wood framing, reinforced concrete, masonry and steel.

  • Design of wood sheathed shear walls for as part of the lateral loads support system. Design of extended wood framed canopy to support pre-engineered trusses.
  • Design included accommodation for large open meditation room and support of 1200 lb statue.
  • Open communication channel between the owner and architect to ensure that the design suited the needs of the congregation.
  • Value Engineering budget friendly design to meet Monastery congregational cost constraints.
  • Designed alternative wood/concrete hybrid structure within client’s time and cost constraints.

Mohawk College Solar Carport - Hamilton

Structural Engineering Services for the Design of the Largest Solar Carport in Canada.

  • Steel framed canopy supported on reinforced concrete foundations attached to battered helical piles.
  • Develop complete set of drawings including layouts, plans, sections, notes, specifications and elevations to meet the scope of work.
  • Preparation of working drawings for client tender and construction purposes.
  • Documents completed in accordance with the requirements of the latest Ontario Building Code.
  • Cost estimate for building materials to construct solar canopy.

Condominium - 525 Richmond Street West - Toronto

J.P. Samuel & Associates acted as Structural Engineer for the design and construction of the small-rise condo.

  • Structural Engineering design and drawings, shop drawing review and site reviews.
  • Ten Storey Residential Apartment with three levels of underground parking
  • Cast -in-place reinforced concrete slab and column design.

73 Water Street N - Parking Garage Restoration - Cambridge

Engineering services for structural assessment and restoration drawings

  • The existing concrete garage structural restoration entailed on-site assessment and data collection to outline particular areas of concern. We provided a detailed structural restoration report providing deficiencies in the condition of the parking garage structure and recommendations on repair procedures. 
  • We provided detail design drawings outlining specific repair locations and waterproofing procedures for restoring the concrete and preventing further degradation in the future.
  • Provided contract administration services for the project and formed the tender document including guidance on contractor selection in accordance with the criteria outlined in the contract.

2080 Trinity Church Rd. - Able Living - Additional Bedrooms and Washroom Renovation - Glanbrook

Structural, mechanical, electrical and sprinkler design services for the addition of 6 new bedrooms and new washroom using existing space within the facility. 

  • Long term care facility renovation required an accelerated timeline and cost effective design to meet the emergency needs of the Covid-19 Pandemic additional tenant demand.
  • Structural work entailed window and door openings, support of mechanical equipment
  • Provided client with 3 different layouts for new bedrooms and washrooms
  • Options included en suite washrooms, a group washroom and the addition of a laundry room
  • Additional tenant bedroom were required to fit within the existing building footprint so multiple layouts were provided to the client to aide in determination of the best design option

Halton Police Renovations: Division 11 and Division 20

Developed structural engineering drawings for the renovation of the existing building, to laterally support the new glass partition walls. 

  • At 11 Division, Oakville, the structural engineering work included the design of the lateral support system for the glass partition walls attached to the existing reinforced concrete and steel structure. The support system was designed to avoid maximum interference with the existing ducting and piping.
  • At 20 Division, Orangeville, the structural design of the lateral support system for the glass partition walls supported by the existing steel structure. Design included for structural support system for new door and window opening

Gathering Place by the Grand - 2593 Chiefswood Road - Ohsweken

Acting as Structural Engineer for Structural Assessment and Rectification Drawings

  • Completed a site assessment of existing structure, identifying structural inadequacies.
  • Develop a structural assessment report outline specific deficiencies which do meet building code requirements.
  • Roof trusses found to be inadequately constructed and overstressed. Structural remediation drawings including new truss reinforcement, support beams and columns with helical pile foundations.
  • We worked in-tandem with the owner to meet cost and schedule requirements.
  • Provided multiple design options including full roof truss reinforcement or additional beams and wood columns to support the overstressed trusses.

Third Floor Addition, 269 Richmond Street, Toronto

J.P. Samuel & Associates acted as Structural Engineer on the project for the third storey addition.

  • Design included incorporating new steel framed and concrete structure with existing masonry brick wall and wood framed structure.
  • Limited existing drawing information was available for the original structure due to the age (>100 years)
  • Coordination and implementation was completed in tandem with the Architect, Mechanical, Electrical consultants through coordination meetings.

  • Fairview Mall: Steel and reinforced concrete structural design for renovations to existing structure.
  • Georgian Downs: Expansion to mall; structural steel and reinforced concrete design.
  • Rutherford Marketplace: Steel and reinforced concrete structural design for renovations to existing structure.

Structural design of micro-pile foundation supported concrete slab design to remediate existing slab-on-grade system.

Cambridge Memorial Hospital
